I'm Kalyani Sapkal — a fundraising consultant and strategist with 13+ years of experience helping nonprofit leaders move from reactive grant hustle to calm, strategic, well-funded programs. I built Kalyani Consulting because I believe high-level fund development expertise should be accessible to every Executive Director leading with purpose — not just organizations with the biggest budgets.
Work With Me →
I came to fund development the long way. Before nonprofits, I worked in corporate finance— securing $170M+ in financing for real estate and energy projects. I understood systems, strategy, and what it takes to build something that works at scale. I brought that strategic lens with me into a sector that rarely gets to use it.
For over a decade, I worked as a grant writer and prospect researcher for organizations across food access, water justice, arts and culture, education, humanitarian work, and more — raising over $3 million for small nonprofits with a grant success rate above 60%.
What shaped me most was the accumulation of years spent inside organizations, watching what happened when the right systems were in place and what fell apart when they weren't. Somewhere along the way I became a strategist, a sounding board, a coach, and often a confidante to the Executive Directors I worked alongside. I saw the inner workings — the board dynamics, the cash flow anxiety, the late-night deadline scrambles, and the moments of real breakthrough. I did it all alongside them. That closeness to the work, and to the people doing it, fueled everything.
Over time two distinct needs became clear. Established nonprofits needed a reliable strategic partner to manage their grants infrastructure — someone who could build the systems, track the deadlines, and develop multi-year strategy alongside leadership so the organization could grow with confidence instead of scrambling to keep up. And smaller, grassroots organizations needed something different: access to the kind of high-level fund development thinking that had always been reserved for better-resourced nonprofits.
Small and grassroots nonprofits were being left out of the conversation entirely — too often dismissed as under-resourced or not ready, when really they just hadn't been given the right tools. That's why I launched the ElevatED Leadership Club — to put high-level strategy directly into the hands of the Executive Directors doing the work, so they can lead with confidence and build the funding base their mission deserves.
My Point of View
01
The self-doubt is real — and it's not earned
So many grassroots Executive Directors carry a quiet sense that they are behind — that other organizations have something figured out that they haven't yet. In most cases, that feeling has nothing to do with their capability. They simply haven't had access to the kind of strategic support that makes the path clearer.
02
Isolation is one of the hardest parts of the job
Leading a small nonprofit can be lonely. EDs often feel they can't show uncertainty to their board, their staff, or their funders. They need a thinking partner — someone who understands the full complexity of the role and can help them navigate it without judgment. That's the relationship I try to build with every client.
03
Strategy should feel accessible — not intimidating
Fund development language can feel overwhelming, and that overwhelm stops smart leaders from moving forward. My job is to cut through the complexity — to take what works in high-level fundraising strategy and make it practical, clear, and immediately usable for the leaders who are actually in the room doing the work every day.
Whether I'm managing a grants department or coaching an Executive Director through their next stage of growth, the goal is always the same: give nonprofit leaders the clarity, strategy, and confidence to build something sustainable — and stop second-guessing themselves along the way.
